12月13日、東京・有楽町の東宝本社において、06年度東宝配給作品のラインナップ発表会が行われた。来年公開の23作品の中で、最大の注目作は、アーシュラ・K・ル＝グウィンによる名作ファンタジー小説を映画化するスタジオジブリの最新作「ゲド戦記」。しかも、同作で監督デビューを果たすのが、宮崎駿監督の息子である吾朗氏だというのだから驚きだ。
ジブリの鈴木敏夫プロデューサーによれば、「風の谷のナウシカ」から「ハウルの動く城」まで、宮崎駿監督の作品は「ゲド戦記」の強い影響を受けており、約30年に渡って映画化を希望していたとのこと。しかし、かつて原作者のル＝グウィンに映画化を断られた過去があるという。ところが、3年ほど前に翻訳者を通じて「『ゲド戦記』を映画化できるのは宮崎駿しかいない」というメッセージが届けられ、企画がスタートした。
当時、宮崎駿監督は「ハウルの動く城」の製作に没頭しており、実質的に「ゲド戦記」企画のリーダーとなってストーリーの構成や絵コンテの作成を手がけたのが息子の吾朗氏であった。その働きぶりを見た鈴木プロデューサーが、監督への抜擢を決断したとのことだ。
ちなみに、息子が監督するとの報告を受けた駿監督は大反対したそうで、鈴木プロデューサーは「こうなったら吾朗監督に頑張ってもらって、父の不安を払拭するような立派な作品を作ってほしい。7月の公開に間に合うように（笑）」とのコメントを発表した。なお、スタジオジブリの公式サイトでは、吾朗監督の日誌も読めるので要チェック。「ゲド戦記」は、06年7月公開予定だ
