「踊る大捜査線」シリーズからスピンオフした「交渉人 真下正義」「容疑者 室井慎次」を手掛けたプロデューサーでフジテレビ映画事業局長の亀山千広が、同シリーズの新たな番外編をドラマで制作することを発表した。今回主人公に大抜擢されたのは、「交渉人 真下正義」に登場した木島丈一郎警視で、寺島進（41）が演じている。木島はたたき上げの現場の刑事として真下に協力し、事件解決のために奔走。公式サイトでも話題になったキャラクターだ。「木島はとても熱いキャラクター。注目も集めた。そこでサブストーリーを、ということになった」と亀山は抜擢理由について語った。
現在「踊る～」シリーズの本広克行（40）が台本を執筆中で、他の出演者は未定だが、12月に2時間枠で放送する予定であると説明した。
現在公開中の「容疑者 室井慎次」は17日に動員200万人を突破。柳葉敏郎(41)や筧利夫大(43)らがヒット御礼舞台あいさつを行った。木島を主人公にしたスピンオフからのスピンオフ構想は、その席で亀山が明らかにした。
