当時、そのキワモノぶり（グロテスクさ）で話題になった「ソウ」を観てみた。
観てみると、堂々たるＡ級ぶりだった。
＜ストーリー＞
薄汚れた広いバスルームで目を覚ました２人の男、医師・ゴードンとアダム。
二人の真ん中には、血で染まった死体が・・・
２人に面識はなかった。
さらに、二人は部屋の両端に、それぞれ鎖で足首がつながれていた。
状況がまるで呑み込めず錯乱する２人に、「６時間以内に目の前の男を殺すか、２人とも死ぬかだ」というメッセージがゴードンに告げられる。
ゴードンの妻と子供は、人質にとられていた。

ジグソウが仕掛けた残忍な“ゲーム”だ。
負ければ死んでしまう“ゲーム”だ。
ジグソウは、この“ゲーム”で、それまでカミソリ部屋でカミソリで手首を木って自殺しようしたことのあるの男を、同じく放火魔を、焼死させている。
その“ゲーム”のやり方も巧妙だ。
血液中に作用の遅い毒を注入し、部屋の隅に解毒剤のある金庫が用意されている・・・
金庫を開ける番号は、壁に書かれている。
男の体には引火性物質が塗られている。
部屋にはロウソクが１本。部屋は薄暗い。沢山、書かれている番号を確かめるには、ロウソクが絶対、必要だ。
男は全裸、しかも部屋の地面には、ガラスやら何やらが敷き詰められ、転びやすくなっている。
唯一、生き残ったのは、アゴに装置がつながれていた麻薬中毒のアマンダ。
タイマーが切れるとアゴは砕け散る。
装置をはずす鍵は、死体の胃袋の中だ。
じつは、死体と思われたのが死んでおらず、アマンダが、腹を近くにあったメスで開けようとした、まさにその瞬間、目を覚ました。
アマンダは、構わず自分が生き残るため、夢中で、その人間の腹をかっさばいた。
死体と思われていた男は、過量の麻酔薬を打たれ、動けなかっただけなのだ。つまり、生きていたのだ。
鍵を見つけ出したアマンダは、生き残り、ジグソウにより、その日から“生”に感謝するようになったという。
どうやらジグゾウは、“命”を粗末に扱う人間をターゲットに選んでいるようなのだが・・・
事件を追いかけ、ジグゾウを追い詰めたタップ刑事は、相棒を無残な形で殺され、気が狂ってしまう。
事件現場に残されていたペンライトから、以前、犯人として、ゴードン医師は、疑われている。
アリバイがあったため、無実が証明されたが。
ゴードンとアダムが閉じ込められているバスルームの様子を、ジグゾウは、テレビを通して、ライブで見ていた。
面識のない二人であったが、ゴードンとアダムは、全く見ず知らずの人間ではなかった。関係があったのだ。
ジグゾウが残したヒントによって、２人は、タバコ２本、着信専用携帯電話を手にする。
着信専用携帯電話に、ゴードンへ人質にとられている妻と子供から電話が・・・
はたして、ゴードン医師は、ジグゾウの指令どおり、アダムを殺してしまうのか？
無事、妻と子供を助け出すことが出来るのか？
ジグゾウとゴードン医師には、どんな因縁が？

＜感想＞
何かホラーのようなふれこみで宣伝されていたようですが、物語の展開、ラストに明かされる真犯人といい、とてもインディペンデンテント製作とは思えない堂々としたＡ級振りでした。
「ソウ２」と「ソウ３」とシリーズ化されたのも納得です。
