ヤン・マーテルのベストセラー小説「パイの物語」の映画化を、「アメリ」のジャン＝ピエール・ジュネ監督が手がけることになった。「パイの物語」は、遭難事故に遭った16歳のインド人の少年が動物たちとともに漂流するという冒険小説で、もともとM・ナイト・シャマラン監督（「シックス・センス」「サイン」）が監督する予定だったが、オリジナル作品「Lady in the Water」を監督するために降板。続いて「ハリー・ポッターとアズカバンの囚人」を手がけたアルフォンソ・キュアロン監督が起用されたが、こちらも新作「Children of Men」を監督するために降板していた。
