中でもこの「ミラーズ・クロッシング」(1990)は出色のできです。
トップシーンは、「ゴットファザー」を思わせるような出だしですが内容は全然違います。
１９２９年、アメリカ東部の町二つの勢力が暗黒街でシノギを削っていました。この映画は、そんな時代のアイルランド系とイタリア系ギャングの抗争を描いた作品です。そこには練り込まれたストーリーがあります。
アイルランド系のボスの片腕、ガブリエル・バーンはボスの情夫と関係を持っているのですが、その事を告げ、アイルランド系のギャングを追放されます。そして、イタリア系ギャングに寝返る訳ですが、ボスの片腕が納得しません。忠誠心の証拠としてミラーズ・クロッシングでバーニー（情夫の弟；ジョン・タトゥーロ）殺害を命じられたガブリエル・バーンだが、殺したと見せかけバーニーを逃す。他の仲間は、殺したものと思い、信用を勝ち得ます。ここから、ギャングの抗争は激化していきます。
ラスト、ガブリエル・バーンがアイルランド系のギャングを裏切った真の目的が明らかになります。また、ここでは紹介し切れませんが、ストーリーはもっと複雑です。また、役者も配役に合った曲者揃いです。
また、本当にジョン・タトゥーロを殺害したのかどうかミラーズ・クロッシングにボスの片腕がガブリエル・バーンを引き連れて森の中を行くシーンや情夫がパブの窓をバックにピストルをガブリエル・バーンの首に突きつけ、弟を殺したのかどうかを迫るシーンではセリフを含めて映画史に残るような名シーンです。また、アイルランド系のボスが大音量で僕の好きな「ダニーボーイ」がかかる中、ギャングらに襲撃されるシーンも逸脱です。
他にもコーエン兄弟のユーモアが所々に詰まった作品となっています。
ラストの情夫がガブリエル・バーンを無視して通り過ぎるシーンは名作「第三の男」へのオマージュになっています。
