「宇宙戦争」のリメイクを監督したスティーブン・スピルバーグ監督が、今度は「地球最後の日」（51）のリメイクを手がける可能性が出てきた。同作は惑星衝突による危機を描いたSF映画で、「ディープ・インパクト」（98）や「アルマゲドン」（98）に強い影響を与えたとされる。
このリメイク企画は、スティーブン・ソマーズ監督（「ハムナプトラ」「ヴァン・ヘルシング」）が監督・製作・脚本を務める前提で進められていたが、ソマーズ監督が20世紀フォックスとミラン・トレンツの児童書の映画化「A Night at the Museum」の監督契約を交わしたため降板、スピルバーグ監督に話がまわってきたという。プロデューサーとしての参加はほぼ確実だが、監督については未定。なお、スピルバーグ監督は現在「ミュンヘン」の撮影中で、「SAYURI」と「レジェンド・オブ・ゾロ」のプロデューサーも務めている。その後は「インディ・ジョーンズ4」に取りかかる予定。
